Department Awarded Brazil-U.S. Professorship in Physics for Fall 2018

Monday, August 6, 2018

We are pleased to announce that the Department will host Prof. Victor Goncalves in Lawrence between September 17 to October 12, 2018. He has been awarded the Brazil-U.S. Professorship given jointly by the Sociedade Brasileira de Física (SBF) and the American Physical Society (APS), and is hosted by Professors John P. Ralston and Daniel Tapia Takaki.

Professor Victor Goncalves is a Full Professor in Physics at Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), Brazil, and works in the field of theoretical nuclear physics and teaches various undergraduate and graduate courses.

Prof. Goncavles research interests are in high-energy nuclear physics, the physics of strong interactions and its implications in neutrino and cosmic ray physics. He has over 150 peer–reviewed publications and has supervised several students at different levels, as well as postdoctoral researchers. He is currently the leader of the High and Medium Energies group at UFPel.

He completed his PhD in Physics at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil in 2000. He recently served as the Coordinator of the Graduate Studies in Physics, and has also been the Chair of the Physics and Mathematics Institute at UFPel. In the academic year 2015-2016 during a sabbatical leave, he was a visiting researcher at Lund University, Sweden.

During this visit in the Department, Prof. Goncalves will interact with undergraduate and graduate students in the theory and nuclear physics group, and will give a series of seminars on the physics of ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, and the connections with existing facilities at RHIC, LHC and the future U.S.-based Electron-Ion Collider.
