Daniel Nunes graduated with a double B.S. in Astronomy and Physics from the Department in 1997, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science from Washington University in St. Louis. His research has focused on geophysics, surface processes and remote sensing of Venus and Mars. Currently at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Daniel has participated in a variety of activities, including using radar sounder and radar imager data to characterize the geologic and tectonic history of planetary surfaces, analyzing gravitational fields to investigate volcanic features, writing software for and operating airborne imaging spectrometers, and co-authoring proposals for Discovery and New Frontiers types of planetary missions. Currently, he conducts science operations for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, is the Investigation Scientist and Co-I of the SHARAD radar sounder at Mars, and the Investigation Scientist for the development of the RIMFAX ground-penetrating radar instrument that will be flown on the Mars 2020 rover."
