Physics & Astronomy Department Student Organizations

Society of Physics Students

The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is open to all persons with an interest in physics. Sigma Pi Sigma is the physics honors society within SPS with scholastic requirements for membership. SPS is a member society of the American Institute of Physics. This organization elects its own officers and also nominates the student representatives (both graduate and undergraduate) to the Departmental Assembly.

Graduate Student Organization

The Physics & Astronomy Department Graduate Student Organization is led by a group of graduate students within the department. They organize events, discuss graduate student related issues, and more! For more information, contact one of the GSO Executive Officers or the Graduate Coordinator.

National Society of Black Physicists

The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) is the largest and most recognizable organization devoted to the growth, development, and advancement of the African-American physics community. The Lambda Phi Kappa student chapter of NSBP at KU serves as a hub for promoting astronomy and physics through seminars, workshops, and outreach programs designed to engage students at all levels. We aim to inspire the next generation of astronomers and physicists, particularly underrepresented minorities, by facilitating interactions between students, faculty, and departments and by encouraging mentorship, research collaborations, and interdisciplinary initiatives. Additionally, we will focus on creating networking opportunities by connecting our members with NSBP's national network and collaborating with other chapters.
